allspice
Allspice is indeed a curious spice. It is not a blend of spices as one may think, but a spice in and of itself. Sometimes it is called Jamaica pepper because the seeds do resemble a peppercorn. Allspice is native to Jamaica, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries.
These lovely berries smell a bit like cloves, cinnamon, pepper, pepper. It's a curious taste that adds so much depth to your dishes, especially stews, YUM!
I use allspice in both forms: berries and powder. You only need a little bit because the flavor is so powerful. If you use the berries, tie them in a cheesecloth and toss them in the stew all wrapped up. They will infuse your stew with a wonderful flavor.
