currants
Currants is a berry that grows on a bush and is quite tart.
Interestingly enough, the currants sold in the US are for the most part not currants at all but the dried fruit of a Greek grape variety called Corinth.
In Europe, however they are very popular.
Many years ago the production of currants was banned in the US because it was thought that they had a fungus that spread to the white pine. Ninety years later it was proven that this assumption was false. So, all this time people have been baking with dried grapes, and not with currants.
Thankfully now, due to scientific evidence the industry is reviving which gives a boost to some farmers willing to revive a desired crop.
