strawberries
Strawberries are probably one of North America's favorite fruits. Drive by most farm stands in the summer, and the tables are teeming with them. They are also my favorite fruit.
The curious thing about strawberries is that they have their seeds on the outside. Therefore, botanically speaking, a strawberry is not a berry, but something called and aggregate fruit. By the way, there are about 200 seeds in an average sized strawberry.
These lovely red summer gems are also very nutritious. They are high in vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and folic acid.
But before strawberries were loved in the US, it is important to note that their history goes back a long way. The Romans used them for medicinal purposes: to ease kidney stones, sadness. In medieval times, masons carved them in churches.
