sumac
Sumac is a red powdery substance that comes from the dried berries of the sumac tree. When the berries are dry, they are crushed to create a deep red powder.
The taste is bright and citrusy, and it is a key ingredient in Middle Eastern as well as Turkish cuisine. However, in the Middle East a drink is made with this berry that relieves stomach upsets.
There are so many used for this spice. Sprinkle it on top of hummus. Another use? Mix it with olive oil and use it as a dip for pita bread. One of my favorite uses for sumac is sprinkling it on a rotisserie chicken, and baking it. Bright, earthy flavors! Now, if you want to be adventurous, sprinkle it on popcorn, or your French fries.
Another use for sumac is in making zatar, a Middle Eastern spice blend that is used in many dishes. By the way , I make my own blend.
By the way, if you don't have sumac fresh lemon juice is a good alternative since they both have a sour taste.
I encourage you to try this delicious spice, and add it to your cabinet. cooking is all about innovating.
