tequila
What is tequila made from?
Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the fermented juiced of the blue agave plant. The spirit has been around for over 2,000 years. Prior to its margarita days, it was used in indigenous rituals. The Aztecs made a brew called pulque which was a fermented drink. The Spaniards are thought to have been the ones who decided to distill the beverage to obtain a cleaner, clearer drink.
Tequila can be clear or have a light brown color. The latter is a result of the process: either adding caramel to it, or aging it in barrels.
Like with any spirit, the quality and the price will vary. Whether you make a margarita, or enjoy the higher quality spirit on its own, you are taking part in an ancient tradition.
