If you have time and patience, you can make your own tomato paste. It's not hard, or involved. It just takes time.
Tomato paste is nothing more that tomatoes that have been seeded and cored, and skinned. They are then cooked for a long time to remove as much of the water content as possible.
Although tomato paste sounds like one of those products that has been around for centuries, it really did not become available in stores until the early 20th century.
I use tomato paste whenever I make marinara sauce, or chili. Whenever I open a can, I freeze the remaining amount into an ice cube tray, this way I extend its shelf life.
