Yikes Cinco de Mayo is like right on the doorstep. Are you having a party? Are you going to a party? Regardless, here are a few Cinco de Mayo party ideas to inspire you. Some of these treats are healthy, some are not! Just warning you.
And just a little history lesson before the post. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s independence day. The date represents the victory of Mexican forces over the French at the battle of Puebla in 1862. It is also a representation of unity and determination. The Mexican victory over the French army was compared to David’s defeat of Goliath.
Now that we have the history lesson out of the way, here are ten fabulous recipes to kick your Cinco de Mayo party up a notch.
Mango black bean salsa for example is super healthy and one of my favorites. Great combination of flavors, extremely simple to prepare, and beautiful color contrast. You all know how much I like pretty food right?
Yuca Strips– well, this one is not so healthy with all the frying and all, but it is definitely an interesting alternative. You can serve this tasty tuber with your choice of dip, salsa comes to mind, or how about a nice guacamole? Just an idea.
Mango tomatillo salsa – another healthy one, and again super easy to make. The salsa will turn out a nice bright green color. Very pretty. Very festive. Perfect for a Cinco de Mayo party. It goes great with multi grain tortilla chips, by the way it would also make a great dip for yuca strips.
Tamales – these are kind of a day’s work, but if you have the time, they are so worth it. You can make a big batch and freeze them, that’s what I do. Pork and chicken are my favorite fillings.
Blue Margarita -Pretty and refreshing. Healthy? Hmmm… sorry, no! However it will make you think you are in a tropical beach with your toes in the sand. I’ll take that!
Polvorones de Limon -melt in your mouth, buttery, citrusy, what can be better? Every party needs a good dessert and this one is perfect for a Cinco de Mayo party.
Flan – my downfall. This creamy custard is not really that hard to make. The caramel sauce is perfection. I think your friends will like it. Mine do!
Mini Beef Empanadas– Now, no Cinco de Mayo party would be complete without a batch of mini beef empanadas. These were my favorite snack as a kid. They still are. My freezer is never without a batch.
Horchata – a delicious summer drink. So refreshing, so sweet. It’s popular in Spain and Mexico.
Shrimp Ceviche – another variation on the popular fish ceviche. I like to serve mine in scoops for a festive look. It will be a great addition to any Cinco de Mayo Party.
