jicama
The word jicama comes from the word xicamatl in the Nahuatl language. It is a tuber that is part of the bean family.
The jicama is starchy, and has a sweet flavor, and can be eaten raw or cooked. You can put it through a juicer, and extract its liquid. Another way to enjoy it is in salads, or to make a slaw with cabbage and carrots as a topping for tacos.
Although the jicama is native to the Americas, it is widely eaten in Asia as well as southeast Asia.
