Vietnamese iced coffee, or cà phê sữa đá, combines strong phin-brewed coffee with sweetened condensed milk and ice for a bold, creamy and refreshing drink. Learn how to make this classic Vietnamese coffee at home in just minutes.
Place 1 tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk in each glass.
Place a phin filter on top of the glass and add 2 tablespoons of coffee then press down the coffee with the plunger. Pull up the plunger slightly to allow water to pass through.
Add 1 oz of the boiling water to the phin filter and allow sit for 30 second. This will "bloom" the coffee.
Add the rest of the hot water to the top of the phin filter and allow to drip. This usually takes 5-8 minutes.
Add 2-4 ice cubes to each glass.
Stir well to combine thoroughly.
Notes
Tips for the best Vietnamese iced coffee:
Brew the coffee strong because the ice will dilute it.
Use sweetened condensed milk, not evaporated milk.
Adjust the amount of condensed milk to your preferred sweetness.
Don't press the coffee too firmly in the phin, or it may drip too slowly.
Let the coffee brew slowly rather than rushing it.
Use plenty of ice.
Stir the hot coffee and condensed milk thoroughly before serving.
