Turmeric is a root with a bright yellow color that when dried and ground they become one of the main spices in making a curry blend. Although it has just recently acquired popularity in the US, it's been used in India for thousands of years as a culinary and medicinal ingredient.
In the US, recently the medicinal properties of turmeric have been discovered. The main component in this root is curcumin, which is an anti inflammatory, and also contains powerful antioxidants.
Because curcumin is fat soluble recommended that you take curcumin with a fatty food. Also recommended is to take with with pepper since it will enhance its absorption.
